Printer Friendliness

Web users often want to print the content of a page. Neat printing of the content (e.g. without having the borders cut off) can be achieved by implementing a print function and also by including stylesheets which have been optimised for printing.

Further information:
http://www.thestyleworks.de/tut-art/layout_print.shtml

The tested website does not contain specific technical implementations available on all web pages to allow content of the website to be printed, which usually leads to mistakes and imperfect printing results.

Non changing page title.

Each page of a website should have its own page title, which reflects the content of the page itself. This carries many advantages, e.g. page titles are used for bookmarking and are read by search engines. Unique page titles therefore lead to search engine optimisation.

Further information:
http://www.socialpatterns.com/search-engine-optimization/writing-better-titles/

There is little variation of page titles.

Link to Local Files

Links to web files placed on local files do not work, and are therefore classed as 'dead' links. Such links should be avoided.

Links to local files were found, which would lead to an error message (404 not found). It is advisable to run a link check.

On-site search feature

"Search is the user's lifeline for mastering complex websites. The best designs offer a simple search box on the home page and play down advanced search and scoping."

Further information:
http://www.webreference.com/new/searchinter.html

No generic website search function was found.

Complex URLs

"Even though machine-level addressing like the URL should never have been exposed in the user interface, it is there and we have found that users actually try to decode the URLs of pages to infer the structure of web sites. Users do this because of the horrifying lack of support for navigation and sense of location in current web browsers. Thus, a URL should contain human-readable directory and file names that reflect the nature of the information space."

Further information:
http://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/uri-choose

The tested website does not comply with this requirement.

Sitemap

Sitemaps allow users to have a quick and complete overview of the website.

Further information:

No sitemap was found on the tested website.

Nr of requests per page

Per page request, one or more requests for images, CSS files, javascript files, etc. are sent, depending on the coding of a website. Performance is impacted if too many requests are sent.

The amount of hits is relatively high, suggesting that work needs to be done to reduce it.

RSS or Atom Feed

RSS is a technique that allows users to subscribe to contents of a website such as news, reports, blogs, etc. Atom is a format competing with RSS.

Newly published content is regularly and automatically downloaded on the subscriber's computer or other devices thanks to RSS or Atom. This allows the subscriber to keep up to date.

Functions based on RSS are increasingly integrated in existing applications, like e-mail programmes or web browsers.

Acronyms:
RSS: Really Simple Syndication, also called Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary

No contents in RSS or Atom format were found.

Table Summary

Depreciated: "The

summary attribute is not supported in HTML5."

"The TABLE element takes an optional SUMMARY attribute to describe the purpose and/or structure of the table. The overview provided by the SUMMARY attribute is particularly helpful to users of non-visual browsers."

Further information:
http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10-TECHS/#gl-table-markup

No tables or not enough tables containing summaries were found on the tested website.

Table Header

Table headers should be recognisable as such, since they perform a descriptive task. This allows disabled users an optimised user experience with tables.  In addition, this allows a simple unified formatting of all tables on the website through CSS.

The tested website contains some specially marked table headers, or none at all.

Provide a way to bypass groups in your Navigation

Group related links, identify the group (for user agents), and, until user agents do so, provide a way to bypass the group.

Of particular importance is to have at least one link to bypass navigation at the beginning of the document, taking the user directly to the actual content.

Checkpoint 13.6., guideline 13. "Provide clear navigation mechanisms", accessibility guidelines for web content 1.0, W3C suggestion of 5th May 1999 http://www.w3c.de/Trans/WAI/webinhalt.html.

No "Group Bypass" was found on the tested website.

Image Map (graphics file with clickable areas)

An image map is a graphics file with clickable areas to re-direct users. This means that single areas of the graphics file can be defined in such way that they act like a link in a text. By clicking on the specific area, the users are taken to an external URL or to pre-defined are of the website.
Image maps contain problems, especially when they contain barriers. A solution for barrier-free image maps can be found on http://expertinnen-web.de/2006-115/barrierefreie-image-maps/

Further information: http://de.selfhtml.org/html/grafiken/verweis_sensitive.htm

The tested website contains an image map.

Amount of inter-linked/imported CSS files

This test has been depreciated and will be replaced by other quality and performance tests in the next version.

Nowadays it is easy to save colour, type font, images and to a certain extent even the layout in separate CSS files (CSS = Cascading Style Sheet).

Numerous variations are possible, which should be evaluated on a case by case basis. A big advantage is that browsers do not download CSS files with every page, but they save it in the cache memory.

Further information:
http://de.selfhtml.org/css/formate/einbinden.htm#separat
http://www.thestyleworks.de/ref/at_import.shtml

The tested website uses only one inter-linked or imported stylesheets.
